SKETCH CARD Release Dates!

Ok, I finally have some info on the sketch cards I've been working on.

Some of the info is a little bit dated already, but it's still good and the cards can be found with a little detective work ... ironically I can't affored to buy myself any of the card sets I've been working on (sad huh).

Release Dates at a Glance :

July 15: 5FINITY JAM: Mixtape and Pulp Girls Sketch Card Series

September 1: The Female Persuasion starring Sabrina the Teenage Witch - Charity Sketch Card Edition

5FINITY JAM: Mixtape and Pulp Girls Sketch Card Series

As many of you know I have been working with 5finity Productions and a TON of talented artists on several limited edition Sketchcard sets.

The first set being PULP GIRLS created by Jason Martin and Jim Mahfood's Mix Tape.

5finity will be releasing the 600 sketch card Pulp Girls set on 7 / 15 / 2010 and the Mix Tape set should be around the same time.

Pulp Girls are subversive genre girls inspired by grindhouse cinema and pulp heroes and the set features dozens of great DA artists, all doing original art of the characters.

A 5finity card pack is equal to one original artist sketch card randomly inserted from the artist list on the set. The packs themselves retail for $24.95 msrp

The "New" Wonder Woman

The "New" Wonder Woman

I put the word "New" in qoutes as I question just how "New" the New Wonder Woman really is.

I have yet to read the latest issue of Wonder Woman, but the things people are saying about sure don't make me want to run out and buy it.

As for Jim Lee's Wonder Woman costume design, I gotta say it's anything BUT new, hell BeDazzle the WW logo on the back and it's a flash back to the 70's or 80's, geez Jim, why not toss in a sweat band and baggy leggings, she could look like Olivia Newton singing "Let's Get Physical" .

Then I guess someone had the bright idea of rewriting the origins of Wonder Woman.

Rewriting the origins of hyper established characters like say Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman and a few others, is akin to rewriting World history because you don't like the way things are going currently in the World.

I mean, will the World change just because you rewrote it's history to not include the Nazi's? No, WW2 would still be a part of history, like it or not, it still happened.

Will the World suddenly be a better place just cause someone erased the "N" word or a dozen other nasty slurs from all written text? No, but it would be nice if it was that easy.

I think we all know that Wonder Woman's costume and or her origin isn't the problem, it's a lack of writing something really original for a character that's been around a long, long time. I'll be the first to admit it can't be easy to come up with something that's fresh, that's why the killed Superman, broke Batman's back, shot Captain America, sooner or later you start running out of ideas and you need to try something crazy.

Anyway, it's not Wonder Woman's first change of "look" and it won't be the last I'm sure, but let's just hope Wonder Woman kept the receipt for that outfit and gets back to normal soon.

Pulp Girls & Mix Tape Sketch Cards

Just finished up on two new sets of original sketch cards 5finity Productions.

I did twelve cards for Jason Martin's Pulp Girls featuring characters by Jason Martin, The Boo and several other artist, plus I did thirteen cards for the Jim Mahfood Mix Tape set which was loads of fun.

These should be released sometime around July 15 th of 2010 and will be FAST sellers given the history of some of the other sketch card sets I've worked on.

Speaking of other sketch card sets, I have two "Artist Exchange" cards for the P'UPs (puppies and pin-ups) card set up for sale in my store if any of the collectors are interested. You can grab a peek at those here (click).

BIKER Magazine & Me

One day some time ago I sent a few cartoons, illustrations and drawings along with a cover letter to the Editor of BIKER Magazine that literally said (among other things) "You don't have the balls to publish MY art in your magazine".

While I don't generally recommend writing cover letters to Editors that say that sort of thing, I guess the Editor liked my nerve or the cartoons because not long after that he sent me my first assignment.

It was for a two part story starting in the November 2001 issue # 197 of BIKER magazine and finishing in the December issue # 198 of BIKER magazine.

He wanted some cartoony illustrations for a story called O' Tannenbaum about a bunch of misfit bikers selling Xmas Trees in a rather questionable manner, but eventually doing a good deed for some people much less fortunate than even them.

Now, I've loved big nasty chopper motorcycles and hot rod cars ever since I saw a photo of some Hell's Angels with a big old Panhead Harley in LIFE magazine back in the 60's.

As a kid that photo had an impact and that became the life I wanted.

To that end I spent plenty of time reading Hot Rod Magazine, and any bike or hot rod magazine I could get my hands on back in those days.

I'd go to the World of Wheels car shows and drool over every crazy custom car and bike guys like Ed Big Daddy Roth and George Barris built during the 60's glory days of custom cars ... and of course I'd draw cars bikes and skulls all the time.

So the just idea of getting published in BIKER magazine was a big thrill for me.

Well now it's 2010 and the June 2010 issue # 268 of Biker Magazine will be the 60 th ! issue that I've done either a story illustration or a cartoon in.

Nine years later and it still gives me a thrill to see my work in printed in BIKER every single time.

Since that first assignment back in 2001, I've had my cartoons and illustrations published in almost all of my favorite magazines.

I've done cartoons and story illustrations for Easyriders, BIKER, V-Twin, Rebel Rodz and half a dozen other hot rod, motorcycle or tattoo magazines.

Not too shabby for a kid whose Dad once said "You'll never be an artist; nobody wants drawings of skulls and motorcycles".

I do have to admit though, he was right when he said I'd never get rich as an artist, but at least I can say I like what I do and there are people out there that like what I do too.

I may not have any money ... but I'm rich.

Hooters Girl Picket Line ?

Hooters Girl Picket Line - Unfair Wage Practices in California

OK, I saw this article in the New York Times on Hooters getting sued for unfair wage practices in California and well, I just couldn't help but whip up a quick cartoon.

I mean, wouldn't this be like the most fun picket line EVER!

Now mind you I like having lunch at Hooters now and then, and I'm making a little joke about Hooters Girls in picket lines, but I'm in full support the girls.

See, my mom was a waitress for more years than one would or could imagine someone working as a waitress.

So I believe a good wait staff has as much to do with the success of a restaurant as the food does.

So for a company to cheat the wait staff either by cheating on their wages or shorting their tips is just wrong.

As an artist I maybe dirt poor, but I try to leave a tip when a waitress or waiter is good and I'd like to think at the end of the day they get it.

Ok, so I reused some of my prior art of The Dame to speed up the process and get this done ... sue me.

A Fatal Error in Judgment

Clearly I made a fatal error in judgment; sadly I knew it when I did it too.

As some of you know my new book "Crime, Passion and Murder" features the male lead (Mook the detective) on the cover and the female lead (The Dame) in the background.

CLEARLY this was a mistake on my part.

On DeviantArt.com for example the cover art for the book only has a hand full of "Favorites" while the promo Ad "The Dame in Jail" (second image) has dozens of "Favorites".

Not that getting "Favorites" is such a big deal but...

The same was true at WonderCon, hardly anyone looked at the book, but looked at all my other books and the same was true of book sales.

While my older books sold fairly well, while "Crime, Passion and Murder" only sold a few copies.

I find this disturbing mostly because I think "Crime, Passion and Murder" is written far better than my older books and it even was reviewed better than my older books (Read Review of Crime, Passion and Murder).

So what was the "Fatal Error"?

I clearly should have put the female character (The Dame) with large heaving undulating breast on the cover as it seems that be it male or female viewer, that's what gets the attention. ("The Dame in Jail" available in the NoCashComics Girls Postcard Set)

So from now on all my covers will be "Boobs", no faces, no titles, just huge massive silly boobs... possible dozens of them.

These facts seem so true that the ONLY book that I've EVER SOLD OUT OF (Killer Babes) didn't even have a story, just a book of sketches of women in states of undress (third image).

So while I don't like reprinting books (lack of money) I guess I don't have an option.

Meanwhile...

I've done Pre-Registration for FanimeCon in San Jose - May 28 -31.

I'm not sure when they'll let me know if I have a table or not.

Maybe I'll just park out front and sell books out of the back of my car … couple nights in jail, free meals, what the heck, right?

Post Show Words for WonderCon 2010

I just finished up WonderCon 2010 and I'm both jazzed up from all the cool stuff and beat down tired from hauling my boxes of stuff home.

Mean while ... I'm thinking Miss Pirate Bootie over here may have to be the Star of my next drawing for the Pirate Girls Series ... anyone care to vote on that?

What a good time I had, Saturday was SOLD OUT! so tons of people, lots of great costumes (see more photos in my Photo Gallery) and I had great table neighbors like Scott Aleric from HellHasFoundMe.com and Alicia "Kat" Dillerman from KatGirl.net

Many of my fans came by to say high and get prints or the new books and loads of people expressed interest in seeing the second issue of Toxic Funnies with Baby Jane get finished. So I guess I need to really get crackin' on that book and get it finished.

Did plenty sketch book drawings for people and a Con Sketch or two as well as a commissioned Sketchcard of a sexy Bride of Frankenstein, now that was fun! Sadly i don't have a photo of it, so if I'm lucky maybe the girl will see this and send me a photo of it.

Met several friends, artist and industry people athough quite briefly as everyone was busy. My freind Jason of Super Real Graphics had a big batch of new books that he and other artist had just finshed up, so I picked up Toxic Candies Zombie Tramp 1 & 2 (good stuff). The guys from 5Finity Productions drove fifteen hours to meet and greet with a bunch of us that have been doing sketch cards with them and then drove another fifteen hours to get home...crazy, but very cool.

Chatted a bit with Nei Ruffino the fantasic colorist for such comics as "Escape From Wonderland", "First Wave", "Hack Slash", "Blackest Night" and many many more fantastic comics.

I also got to trade books with the fantastic Dean Yeagle (Mandy) and chat with him and his wife just a bit . They a re a great couple and really enjoy the fans of Mandy.

Saturday night I went out to dinner with my good freind Brian Kolm (Atomic Bear Press), Lex Fajardo (Kid Beowulf) , his publisher and a host of other fun folks. We had a huge feast Buca di Beppo and stuffed our selves to the gills.

Buca di Beppo also gives you a giant cupcake within 7 days of your birthday and a bunch of us are all April Babies so we had five of these HUGE cupcakes.

So for me, WonderCon was better than EVER! thanks to my fans and friends new an old.

Next Years WonderCon can't come soon enough, hope to see you all again!

WonderCon 2010

Hi Everyone, I'll be at WonderCon 2010 Table # 42 in Artist Alley ! April 2nd to 4th at the Moscone Center in San Francisco.

Comics For Cures Auction 2010

3rd Annual SKETCH CARD BENEFIT AUCTION & GALLERY SHOW for the AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY

I just finished up this five card set for the Comics 2 Games annual SKETCH CARD GALLERY SHOW & Benefit Auction for American Cancer Society.

This is a great event that I've tried to be a part of every year for the last three years, even though I can't be there in person. I also would like to encourage other comics artist to be a part of it too, if not this year, than next year.

Last year alone the auction raised over six thousand dollars and had a great lineup of sketch cards from dozens of artist, from big name artist to little guys like me.

The auction of the cards will end on May 22, 2010. The Comics for Cures website, www.comicsforcures.com, will provide a link to the auction on eBay the week before.

Some people talk about doing something to help; others actually take steps to make it a reality. And with a little help, big things can happen.

Such is the case with the Blue Line Pro Sketch Card Event Cancer, an annual auction that benefits Relay for Life.

Over the past two years, the event has pulled in over $15,000 as hundreds of artists mostly from the comics industry have donated their talents and contributed baseball card-sized pieces of artwork for auction.

In 2008, Robert W. Hickey, founder of Blue Line Pro, started the Event and dedicated it to his wife’s recent bout with cancer. Blue Line Pro, a leading producer of comic book paper products, also make and distribute sketch cards, which are sent out to artists to produce small pieces of artwork.

Past contributors have included some of the comic book industry’s leading professionals including: David Mack, Steve Rude, Dick Giordano, Joe Staton, Todd Nauck, Jimmy Palmiotti, Jim Valentino, Neil Vokes, Don Perlin, David Michael Beck, and hundreds of others.

The auction this year promises to include some of the same as well as some new faces. George Webber is one of those individuals.

The auction of the cards will end on May 22, 2010. The Comics for Cures website, www.comicsforcures.com, will provide a link to the auction on eBay the week before.

P'UPS Sketch Card Set

P'UPS Sketch Card Set

I just finished up a set of "Rare Artist original art" sketch cards for 5finity's, upcoming card set "P'UPS" (pinups and puppies) which will feature Dean Yeagle's Mandy and Skoots.

This is just two of an undisclosed number of cards I did for the set. Some cards feature Mandy & Skoots while other cards feature random pinup girls with an assortment of puppy breeds. There's also a contest, if you get one of each puppy breed there's a prize!
